Sharon is a digital artist based in Sydney, Australia. Her pieces largely pay homage to her Korean heritage. Sharon not only loves to create digital art, she is also a huge sewing enthusiast, crafter and DIY lover. All of her creative interests come under her brand Halfsoybean which she uses to document her projects.

A message from the artist

Smoking Tigress is a tribute to my Korean heritage, particularly traditional Korean folklore. At the start of Korean folktales, the phrase "when the tiger used to smoke" is used to refer to things that happened a long time ago. In this artwork, this phrase is represented in the tigress holding a smoking pipe in her mouth. The tiger is also the national animal of Korea. Commonly, you can see the smoking tiger motif in many traditional Korean artworks. However, the tiger depicted is usually very fierce looking. In this piece, I have done my own take on this motif by illustrating a playful tigress in the peaceful mountain side.

We also see the tigress playing in a field filled with the Korean national flower, Mugungwha. I have also used a colour palette which is heavily influenced by “dancheong”, the decorative colouring on traditional wooden buildings.
