Leah is a proud Mayi woman (Mayi speaking tribes) from the Cloncurry area in North Western Queensland. She is now living on Quandamocka Country Brisbane Bayside. In 2021, Leah started Bunya Designs to follow her passion to tell stories to the world with her art. Leah paints both traditional and contemporary art using storytelling in every piece to educate and teach everyone of her people's culture.
She finds inspiration in her cultural identity and bringing stories of her country and people to life in her art. She paints stories of strength for women and children, loved of the land and all her people. She pays respect to the ancestors who give her these stories in her creativity, to share her culture that transcends words and draws people into wanting to learn about First Nations people.
A message from the artist
'Country in Colour' is a piece inspired from the country we grew up on and the interconnectedness we share with our environment, and how the country and land we live on is absorbed into our being and fibres. The variation of colours capture the many different colours of our country.
As a proud Mayi woman from North Western Queensland I want to share my love of art and interpretation of empowerment of my people. The sky are our pathways to the next life, the yellow is the sun that shines through. The mountains are what shields us on our country. The people sit around in circles among the native foods on country.
